Heat Illness Prevention – Prepare Now for High Temps
Posted: Wednesday May 15, 2013 @ 8:39 amEvery summer for the past several years, Cal/OSHA has been citing scores of employers throughout
the state for a failure to properly implement a Heat Illness Prevention Program.
In general, when employees are exposed to excessive outdoor temperatures, employers must ensure
that they have plenty of cool water, have access to adequate shade and rest to avoid heat-related
illnesses.
The fines are often designated as SERIOUS and start at around $4,000 and can be as much as
$18,000 or more, especially if there is an accident or illness involved. An abbreviated version of the
code is cited below:
T8 CCR Section 3395(e)(2). Heat Illness Prevention
High-heat procedures. The employer shall implement high-heat procedures when
the temperature equals or exceeds 95 degrees Fahrenheit. These procedures shall include the
following to the extent practicable: Observing employees for alertness and signs or symptoms
of heat illness.
